Friday, June 24:
Where to begin……Before I start, your going to hear the word “drunk” a lot, not by the HXOC members, but
because of the camp environment we were camping in.
Kristy and I arrived at the same time as we pulled into the campground which was called Kozi Kamp. Biohazard and
Annette was already there holding the campsite for us. This place was packed! Every other campground connected
to Elk River was packed also…we couldn’t understand why this weekend was so busy. Soon after Kristy and I set-up
our tents, many and I mean many of the “local” campers kept walking up to us asking about our Xterras. “Look at
those snorkels!”, “How deep do you git’r!”, “What kind of truck is that?”…..all evening and night long we kept
getting the locals attention. So much even that everyone practically wanted to hang out with us. A drunken young girl
with her drunken brother (with one of those double drink holder hats) and their mother kept walking by wanting to
chat about our trucks. A couple of old guys just wanted to drink beer with us. One of them pulled out his harmonica
and played a tune for Kristy….we think he was trying to “whew” her, but it didn’t work. Then a couple of younger
drunk guys walked over later and wanted to say hello too. Then one of them decided to yell out profanity to a huge
group of drunken high school kids camping next to us. About eight bare-chested drunk guys came over to see who
“wanted a piece of them”. The guy who started the yelling match then started to “BS” with the group of drunken
guys and became their friend! Finally after about 15 minutes of them having “drunk talk” among themselves and doing
“beer-bongs” by our campfire, they finally left. Finally around midnight most of the Kozi Kamp locals went to bed which
gave us about 1 hour to relax before it was bedtime for us. This is going to be an interesting weekend.
Saturday, June 25:
After we all woke up and ate breakfast, PappaJohn pulled up to our campsite. He left about 430am from Tulsa to get here in
time to launch the canoes. Since Biohazard was so nice to provide a canoe for PappaJohn and I, Kristy bringing her own and
Annette having her Kayak, we didn’t have to ride any bus to or from our campground. We dropped the canoes off the
launch area, than drove our Xterras’ to the finish area so we could bring the canoes back later. I drove back everyone to the
launch area to begin our adventure. This river was about an 8 mile float, had a slow current, shallow and not very wide
compared to the other rivers HXOC has traveled down. The river was packed with already intoxicated folks at 10:00am.
We didn’t have to paddle much, just pretty much floated close beside with other canoe folk. A lot of people had water guns,
so all day everyone was always shooting one another. It was hot, so all the spraying water was welcome. Off and on we
stopped to rest, eat and swim in the river. Many times we had water fights with other local canoe folk. At lunch time, we
pulled off the river for a bit to eat and swim. Next to us was a “big fella” with his teenage kids. They were all swimming
together playing around in the water. Then the father said, “C’ome wrestle wit yur daddy, c’ome wrestle wit yur daddy…”
…..and over and over he kept repeating this phrase till finally his 18 year old son went out to the water to wrestle with him.
The guy was fairly big, so his son didn’t have much of a chance. But it was funny hearing him repeating “...wrestle wit yur
daddy…” over and over again. Good ol’ redneck games I guess. So off we went again down the river. More water fights,
swimming and people watching. We finished the float after about 6-7 hours of just pure floating, not much paddling. Got
back to camp with the canoes and finally had some rest time. But not after too long the rest of the camp was making there
way back also. Then, back to the same events as the night before….more rednecks asking questions and making comments
about our Xterras. Drunken people walking by and saying hello all the time. So Kristy and I moved our Xterras to create a
half-circle around our camp area to keep the rednecks out for at least the rest of the night so we could eat, enjoy our
campfire and sleep the rest of the night. We all were really tired out from canoeing and the sun all day, so we turned in
at 10:00pm. That night, there was a small group of 15-16 year old kids camping on the other side of us. They were quiet
during the early evening trying to just get a fire going before night fall. The rest of the night while we were up, we never
heard much going on over there. About 2 a.m. I awoke to some kid talking really, really loud saying all kinds of profanity. The
same quiet kids next to us were drunk off there a$$ and were keeping the whole campground up. They kept their own
little party going till about 430am…finally I was able to fall asleep. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep well, nor did PappaJohn
for that matter all night. John was up sitting next to the fire when the kids were whooping it up. I think Biohazard snored
through most of the night and didn’t hear much.
Sunday, June 25:
Everyone was awake by 700am or so and started to pack up their stuff to head home.
That’s it! ~KCX~
