Post Anybody replaced their Torsion bars? Need Help...
Image

Broken torsion bar still stuck in the adjuster, not sure how to begin to remove this. I haven't tried to remove the other end from the LCA anchor yet, I'll try the press at work tomorrow for that one.

Should I look at replacing the adjusters before even fighting with getting new bars in the old adjusters? I'm guessing that the adjuster bolt is rusted all to hell just like everything else under there.

Also, any suggestions on shocks? I'm thinking about getting both from Calmini. 4x4 parts torsion bars are cheaper but the Bilstein 5100's cost more. (Better though?)

Any input would be appreciated.

OK, first off, it's been awhile since I replaced my torsion bars, so I could be totally off here, but I think the torsion bars just push in. So, you should be able to either pry that part out with a screw driver or maybe use some pliers.

I would stay away from buying anything from Calmini. Their customer service is complete crap. I would go with the Bilsteins. I've had mine on for 8-9 years and they still ride pretty nice.

Wow Mike!

That torsion bar is rusted in there I bet.

I won't waste my time getting the short little stub out of the adjuster.

You can try to first take out the adjuster...remember the adjuster bolt has two nuts (shut up, perverts!) that they need to be turned opposite directions....spray the hell out of them with Wd-40 and soak...remove the bolt, remove adjuster. See if you can pound it out hitting it left-right with a hammer while the adjuster is in a vise.

In the past, I picked up extra adjusters for the trail....found them at a junk yard for cheap!

Then get new torsion bars....I would use 4x4parts.

My bilsteins are about 9 years old...still holding up. I'm not sure if 4x4parts has those are not....they may have just the Ranchos. Patrick has ranchos on his X....but the front seems too soft on his...or course he has a 200+ bumper on the front now.

I would go with Bilsteins...you can get the stiffer front shocks. I would search on XOC or where ever and get the model number of length of shock and stiffness you want...and maybe order anywhere on the internet or local auto store with that model number.

Here is a write up for the Bilstiens, also has part numbers.

FYI - I visit http://www.ClubXterra.org more than XOC now. Seems much more informative.

Eric,

Thanks for the link... I've got Bilsteins on order along with new torsion bars from 4x4parts.

I can't get the adjuster out of the crossmember. The piece of existing torsion bar is preventing it from twisting out... I've already removed the adjuster bolt hoping that would give me enough play, no luck. :finger:

Looks like I'll probably have to use the dremel with cutting disk first and replace the anchor.

I've already had to use the dremel to remove the sliders, rear bumper and hitch, looking to replace all my hardware as it is rusted to hell..

Looking at building a custom rear bumper as I was going to do some rust removal and re-paint (since the truck is down) and the rear bumper is completely falling apart on the inside. Plus I can integrate the tow hitch. Anybody want to shoot a few pictures of how theirs lines up with the back of the truck. The existing bumper had a nice curve in it and I was going to use either square tube or bent 1/4" plate, but I'm not sure what that gap will look like. I assume it will be near flush in the middle with up to a 3/4" gap on the sides.

Not looking for a tire carrier so it will be a simple bumper. Just looking to match the angle profile of the plastic bumpers on the sides. Maybe add a couple shackle holders.

Patricks father-n-law welded up a new rear hitch that is further back and tucked up then a factory hitch using square tubing..while still using the factory bumper. It doesn't hit any rocks now. COMPARE to Jeff's factory setup. AND here is mine.

Truck is basically up and running but I was wondering if anybody has any good you pull it yards around where I can find a reasonably decent passenger fender. Mine is trashed from a mishap this winter and I don't really want to spend $600 for a new one.

I'd tank any 1st gen fender in blue I can find. Any ideas where to look?

Thanks for any help!

Mike

There is some good yards in KC where I have found xterras before. Midland Salvage or something like that. Try Craigslist and ebay I guess.
